Claiborne Animal Shelter

2011 Summary

2011 Year-End Report

As a supporter of the Claiborne Animal Shelter, we thought you’d appreciate a progress report on this most important venture. We have come a long way!

To refresh your memory, we began construction in March of 2009 and the building was completed by December 2010. This state-of-the-art facility, which is appraised at $585,000, is completely debt-free thanks to the generosity of folks like you. We are so proud and hope you are too!

Our goal for 2011 was to open our doors to homeless animals. Sadly, we didn’t make it.  It will take about $150,000 a year to operate the shelter - money we do not have.  We asked the county for financial assistance on several occasions but our requests were denied.  So…

We decided to approach the unwanted pet problem from a different angle – prevention.  October 29, 2011 was “opening day” at the shelter’s new low-cost spay and neuter clinic. We fixed 25 animals that first day!  We intend to hold at least two clinics a month and will add more if there is a demand.  The clinic will not be an income source for the shelter but it will be self-sustaining.

As we move into 2012, our focus is on generating enough income to become fully operational. On Sunday, February 12 we are holding our first annual $100-a-plate dinner and silent auction at the Woodlake Golf Club restaurant. It will be one of our major fundraisers for the year. Call Carl Nichols at 865-585-7386 to purchase tickets or for additional information.

We’ll soon have a professional dog groomer at the shelter several days a week and will get a percentage of the proceeds. We are giving serious consideration to building a boarding kennel at the back of the shelter property. We believe the estimated $50,000 cost to build the facility would be money well spent. It will generate a steady source of income for the shelter and provide a much-needed service for the community.

As we continue to move forward, we hope we can rely on your ongoing support. Donations are tax deductible and can be mailed to P.O. Box 186, Tazewell, TN 37879, dropped off at the shelter, or you can use the PayPal feature on our WHO WE ARE page.

Thanks so much for your help. Together we will make a difference!
